Saturday, May 14th was a glorious day for us. We celebrated my wife's birthday, or the day that forever changed my life. All that is good for me can be mapped back to May 14th, 1978. The course of my life was forever altered for the good when that beautiful girl was born.
Our celebration ended up taking us to Kansas City to spend some time in the plaza before making our way to Lawrence for a concert.
We grabbed dinner in the plaza at a place that may seem ironic for anyone that knows my wife, Fogo de Chao. Why not take her somewhere that serves the finest meats? I mean she really enjoys meat, right? Not so much. None the less our experience was grand, a fitting way to quench our appetites before heading off to see Joe Purdy play in Lawrence. Which brings me to the recognition of the best way to celebrate anything with my wife, travelling. She loves navigating the world, with a map or without. I marvel at how much joy she finds in going to new places, trying new things, and trying to find the best route to take to get where we're going.
We got in to Lawrence with no problems, and found the downtown area to be an area that we thought we'd enjoy hanging out in, maybe next time I guess. It seem to fit our style much more than the plaza, like I said next time we'll know.
We got to the venue plenty early, grabbed a good seat. It seems that the real value in enjoying music from artists that aren't popular with everyone, is that you can see them in a place with less than 100 other people. It was all that we could have hoped it would be.
As we pulled out of Lawrence at just after 12:30 a.m. we were very much in the euphoria of an awesome concert. Yet in the back of our aging minds we wondered aloud if we had another night like this in us. Our plan was to see Joe in Des Moines the next day, Sunday.
When we left Lawrence I think we were 50/50 on making the trip to Des Moines. As we pulled the covers up at 1:45 a.m. I think the odds had changed to 10/90.
We woke up at around 8:15 a.m. 0/100 we didn't have it in us to do another show and be worth anything on Monday morning.
I think time is catching up with us.
P.S. If you get a chance, check out the Milk Carton Kids. They opened for Joe and were solid!
